ONEG RESCUES BLOCKS LEFT FROM THE HISTORIC DRAKESIDE ROAD TRESTLE BRIDGE, HAMPTON, NH

Since the early 1800s, there has been a passion for everything about the railroads including their bridges. The Eastern Railroad which began in the 1830s, followed the coastline and connected Boston to Maine and had many bridges along its trail. Though the Eastern Railroad suffered a financial decline in the late 1880s it was eventually acquired by the B&M Railroad. Many of the rails no longer stayed in use and the abandoned historic bridges were left behind. One abandoned rail and bridge included the historic Drakeside Road Trestle Bridge in Hampton, New Hampshire.

In 2010, the State of New Hampshire removed the Drakeside Road Trestle Bridge, but crews left the granite abutments. The Town of Hampton had been soliciting the State of New Hampshire to remove the bridge and abutments in order to widen the roadway especially for emergency vehicles. Olde New England Granite was selected as the recipient to head up the repurposing of this historic block material.

As a result, Olde New England Granite now has over 100 – 24″ dimensional granite blocks. This block material is ready for repurposing in all your landscape and hardscape applications.

These and many other products are in stock and on display at our Granite Superstore. We hope to hear from you or see you soon.

Reclaimed Granite Products – Inventory Update – July 2017
Beverly Cobblestones

Planned in 1851 with construction completed in 1852, Rantoul Street was born. Running parallel with Cabot Street, this was a major thoroughfare for residents and businesses alike.

Based on the amount of surface wear to the cobblestone tops, we believe these “Pieces of History” date back to the mid to late 1800s. Sometime ago… perhaps in the 1940s, all of Rantoul Street had been treated with a fresh coat of asphalt. In most cases, the cobblestones in the roadway were simply paved over with asphalt. In fact, 19th century cobblestones were generally considered as an excellent base material for 20th century roadways. Sometimes, as was the case with Rantoul Street, the wear and settling of the pavement necessitates total road reconstruction as the lasting treatment.

Once again, Olde New England Granite was at the right place and at the right time to rescue, reclaim and repurpose these aged and weathered beauties.

These “Beverly’s” are colorful and very well worn. They measure 4″-5″ wide x 4″-5″ depth x 7″-10″ long. Their average weight is 17 lbs. We offer bulk order discounts.

These and many other products are in stock and on dis play at our Granite Superstore. We hope to hear from you or see you soon.

Reclaimed Granite Products – Inventory Update – June 2017

We at Olde New England Granite like to think of ourselves as Rescuers” as much as reclaimers of antique granite products. There is none more evident than with the cobblestones that we rescued a week ago.

Boston Jumbo Cobblestones – Last Saturday, a paving friend of ours was working on a project in Boston when he unearthed cobblestone pavement under the entire area they were contracted to repave. Pressured to complete their project in a timely manner… they needed to dispose of these cobbles tones fast. These were heading to the local landfill. Enter – ONEG TO THE RESCUE and Rescue we did… seven triaxle loads… to our overflow and screening/fabrication yard they came. This was truly a classic rescue of approx. 10,000 beautiful and colorful Boston Jumbo Cobbles tones now ready to repurpose.

Boston Jumbo Cobblestones

Beverly Regulation Cobblestones – Rescued from a two mile stretch of a major roadway through the city of Beverly. For sure, with the large quantities of cobblestones involved, the original plan was to crush any and all the surplus granite cobbles to make the sub-base aggregate material that their project required. ONEG to the rescue once again. We were able to strike an agreement that has all the cobblestones come to our yard to be screened, cleaned and repurposed.

Beverly Regulation Cobblestones

Ocean Edge Regulation Cobblestones – The other recent cobblestones rescue was our “Ocean Edge” cobblestones. These colorful pavers were thought to have been used as road pavers in a section of Scully Square many decades ago. Our recent rescue of these granite gems could only occur during low tide… We literally pulled and rescued these beauties from the Ocean Edge once they were removed as roadway pavers.

Ocean Edge Regulation Cobblestones

Route 1 – 1st Generation Curbing – One of our very best “rescues ” was just a few weeks ago with our Route 1 curbing. The contractor who was awarded this improvement project has their crushing facility literally less than a mile from where this 7,000 feet of curbing was removed. The plan was to remove and crush this granite for the aggregate since their plant is so close. Well, enter… ONEG and our offer to reroute this first generation, premium, step quality, 6″ curbing. This reclamation project is particularly satisfying for us because of the rich Route 1 History that we are helping to preserve.

Route 1 - 1st Generation Curbing

Boston Common Curbing – Just rescued and ready to repurpose 3rd generation curbing. Size 5″ x 15″ -16″ x variable lengths up to 10′.

Reclaimed Granite Products Inventory Update – May 2017

Just rescued – 1st Generation Curbing

There is no way to “curb” our enthusiasm for our two most recent granite curb rescue projects. One at a Northeastern University site and the other in the same neighborhood as Harvard University.

Which curbing is smarter?

  • Northeastern University Curbing
    • 1st generation Cape Ann granite reclaimed curbing
    • Approx. 150 LF
    • Great Patina – Aged and Weathered
    • Foot worn tops are all 7″ hand tooled
    • Excellent retention curb as heights range from
    • 18″ up to 23″
    • Lengths are from 4′ – 9′
  • Harvard University Curbing
    • 1st generation reclaimed curbing
    • Approx. 480 LF of premium step quality
    • 7″ hand tooled tops
    • Heights range from 18″ up to 21″
    • Lengths are from 4′ – 10′

The answer is quite simple… the Northeastern curbing is smarter due to OSMOSIS… This curb shows more footwear. More student footwear translates into smarter curbing. It’ s as simple as that.

PS – The ONEG owners may be a just a little bias… Both Biz and brother, Wes are Northeastern University graduates!

Inventory Update – Jordan Marsh Pavers, April 2016

Fresh from the demolished building itself… we have rescued and reclaimed our newest product we are calling our “Jordan Marsh Pavers.”

Jordan Marsh reclaimed pavers

Jordan Marsh, a New England based department store chain dates back to the 1860’s.  Some of you might know that Jordan Marsh Co. has now become Macy’s, the seller of a wide variety of merchandise.  These products include clothing, furniture and houseware.

It is not what is inside we are excited about capturing but what’s on the outside that stretched across the bottom half of the buildings.  This was a signature look for many of the Macy’s buildings including the 50 year old Bedford, NH outlet.

The granite wall panel design was made up of beautiful squares and rectangular pieces with earthy tone colors.  We intend to market this colorful granite veneer not only for use in veneer applications but as a wide variety of paving applications such as in walkways, patios and in courtyards.  Complete driveways and in motor courts… this granite is just perfect.

Jordan Marsh reclaimed pavers

Wouldn’t the two original operatives of the Jordan Marsh Empire have been intrigued by Olde New England Granite’s rescue and repurposing activities?  We suspect that they would be at least with the granite veneer that was used… with no drill holes or drill marks… they would probably say that this granite veneer is perfect.

Inventory Update – March 2016

Whether you are currently working on a project, shopping for a project or planning a project… Now is a great time to visit our Reclaimed Granite Superstore. Not only has the weather cooperated and allowed our hardscape projects to continue but it has allowed us to reclaim a nice variety of granite products and fill our yard to capacity.

In this issue, we would like to highlight three products that we are very excited to have just added to our inventory… one of which has been approx. four years since we have had in our yard in any quantity.

The first product that we are excited to feature is the cobblestone lot that we excavated in Lawrence at an old munitions factory. This access road up to and around the building showcased some of the most beautiful original cobblestones from the late 1800s. Due to the need for new utilities to be installed here, the cobblestones needed to be excavated and Olde New England Granite was fortunate enough to be awarded the job to carefully excavate and harvest these cobblestones.  These antique cobblestones are regulation size. We have approx. 25,000 available.

Cobblestone Lot

The second product that we are excited to feature is our grouping of granite paving squares… and we have a mountain of them. This colorful, multipurpose product has been reclaimed from the slopes that we see when driving under the overpasses all across the state. While the sizes of this product are variable, one side is consistently 12″ wide. The other measurements range from 12″-18″ in length x 4″-6″ thick. These blocks weigh approximately 80 – 120 pounds each. The surface on one side is typically paving quality which lends itself for use in patios, courtyards, walkways, driveway aprons, wall building, slope retention and veneer applications. Thousands are available.

Granite Paving Squares

The third product featured is our 1st generation hand split slope curb. We have reclaimed this granite from a western Massachusetts road project. This curbing came out of the ground with very little mortar and plenty of patina. Measurements are approximately 12″ wide x 4″-6″ thick x variable lengths. Due to its paving quality on one side, it lends itself as beautiful antique paving for patios, courtyards, walkways, driveway aprons, driveways, steps, wall building, slope retention, vertical curbing as well as how it was originally used… as slope curb.
