A garden was planned for the base of our new entry sign… and we needed an edge retention.
- The existing rolling irregular concrete surface presented one challenge… so the use of large cobblestones seemed to be the right choice of material because they would adapt best with the surface undulations.
- Our Olde New England Granite Jumbo Cobblestones were selected for their color, robust size, and uniformity.
Then, there was a second challenge… how best to secure them so they would not easily be dislodged.
- After the cobblestones were aligned and positioned with the best
surfaces top & front along the radius- Two 3/8″ holes were drilled in the cobblestone bottoms and
- Then corresponding holes were drilled on the concrete driveway, 10″ timber spikes were cut and fit in the holes.
The radius was then checked, and any corrections were made as necessary. Mortar was mixed and gently placed under the stones as they were carefully lifted then tapped into place on grade and jointed.
A. A heavy mix of concrete was used as a backing support.
B. A drain was fashioned in the lower end.
C. 1 ½” stone (to be covered by filter fabric) was used as a drainage subbase for the garden.
D. Holes were drilled into the concrete driveway adjacent to the cobblestones to facilitate placement of “snow markers.”
The project is completed with topsoil, irrigation, and day lilies.
