North Washington St. Bridge Pier Block

Inventory Update March 2021

North Washington Street Bridge – 1900

The Charlestown Bridge, officially named the North Washington Street Bridge is located in Boston and spans the Charles River. The current bridge was built between 1898 – 1900 under the chief engineer, William Jackson and was designed to carry an elevated railway in addition to vehicle traffic.

This, our 4th major bridge reclamation project was also our most ambitious to date. We began our research in late 2019 when it was announced that the City of Charlestown would be replacing the old bridge with a brand new edition. Shortly afterwards, we took the first of several boat rides at low tide to examine the piers and pier blocks.

Early on, we were able to measure the assorted sizes of blocks from each pier. We also researched the origin of granite used in the piers and discovered that there was Cape Ann granite that originated from the Bay View Quarry. This was the beautiful “Sea Green” color that this quarry was so well known for! See the close up photo as a reference. There was apparently one pier only that clearly was quarried at Bay View.

• The most notable block sizes from the piers are 24” H x 24”-30” W x 6’+/- L.
• Officially, we have over 2,000 linear feet of this plus/minus size, gorgeous ‘Sea Green” granite.
• We also removed a portion of the north abutment wall which yielded several unique double sided 24” H x 24” W x 6’-8’ L gray grain Rockport blocks.
