Salvaged Granite Steps and Landings from The Gate of Heaven School South Boston

South Boston’ s “Gate of Heaven” Catholic Elementary School which was erected in 1922, saw its demolition project completed this past week.

Gate Of Heaven School

Once again, Olde New England Granite “came to the rescue” and was able to salvage 95% of the original granite used in the building of this fabled school. This was accomplished as a result of excellent teamwork, superb coordination and highly skilled operators with just the right pieces of equipment. Kudos to our demolition team! They were terrific to work with… from start to finish. They have great respect for the integrity of this old granite.

The Gate of Heaven – current inventory or 100% of what we salvaged:

    • 6′ -9′ L x 3.5′ -5′ W x 8″-12″ Rise

The Gate of Heaven School held its very last event this past November. After being vacant for a number of years, a reunion was held at the school for any and all Gate of Heaven graduates who wanted to celebrate all the memories and have one last look… one last trip down memory lane.

Anybody who attended this event would no doubt have heard about, in conversation, two of the more well-known graduates: U.S. Rep. John W. McCormack and Raymond L. Flynn, former Mayor of Boston. It’ s a good bet that the infamous Whitey Bulger walked up and down these steps and across these landings as a young lad.

Come and see these beautiful historic steps and landings that were all quarried at the famous Deer Isle quarry off the coast of Maine.
